A little history about the area is that Hannah and Lt. George W. Jacobs seemed to have arrived in the city of Evansville in the year 1818. This happened after embarking on a flatboat down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh in 1817. It appears that the trip was made in winter and they came upon Evansville early enough for George to be on the first Grand Jury of the newly created Vanderburgh County in February 1818 and then be appointed the first county treasurer in March.

In the end, the couple ended up buying building supplies with them on the flatboat. As a result, when they built their house on the site of what is now the McCurdy Hotel, it was the first home that also has a glass window. George died at the year of Nov. 9, 1828, leaving Hannah alone with six young children. Finally, she was left only with a War of 1812 pension and her possessions.
